North Place Concept - Developing Idea

 Having been developing ideas and concepts for North Place over the past few weeks, I have been exploring different shapes and patterns, as well as looking at precedents. Some of these being how starlings murmurate for example. I was interested in how they move further apart and then back together to looks as if they are dancing and changing in shade and density in the skies. However I took more inspiration to develop into a design from seeing pick up sticks in a specific layout and pattern, and I thought these could be used to figure out how my circulation and pathway layout is laid out on site. I then developed this rough shape into a design on site with the required buildings and features from the briaf drawn on. I developed this idea at 1:100o @ A3, however I will draw it larger at 1:500 now that I have a close-to-finished design idea. I also took inspiration from a facade of a multi-storey car park I saw near Queen's Square in Bristol and thought I could replicate something siilar on my car park building and couple it with a mirror pond to create an interesting reflection. I also decided the spaces between the pathways made for lots of interestingly shaped, geometric buildings which will make the space feel more modern and abstract, and stand out when compared to anything anyone has been to before.

Following this development, I am looking to change some parts of the design. These include changing my outdoor performance space from an amphitheatre (which I am not keen on!) to a space which might be more in the form of a street busking space or street performance space for any aspiring musicians/performers to have somewhere to showcase their work and talent. I will also alter the detail in how the buildings look and how they are laid out. Overall I am very happy with my design idea currently.

 I decided to get some early, rough sketches down in my sketchbook with regards to ideas for the North Place site in Cheltenham. These were done using both ballpoint pen and colouring pencils. These sketches are by no means developed or deeply thought out ideas, these were simply me roughly sketching the site and thinking about what could work with the placement, and rough sizes of compononents. I used the brief's design criteria to try and ensure all components were integrated, even at this early stage of the process. The green in these sketches not only represents green space and green 'corridors' through the site, but also the potential flows/paths/movements of people through the space. The main missing component from this sketch idea which I would like to integrate as I develop ideas is a bus/coach exchange or station where groups of people can easily access the site. Reader Reflection: In a Nutshell

 "Make every tree a wanted tree." The quote above (Sinden, 1989, p. 10) really stood out to me when reading an extract of In a Nutshell:  Manifesto for Trees and a Guide to Growing and Protecting Them. This reader certainly reiterates my own feelings towards protecting and valuing trees more than our society already does. Many people simply do not understand the value of trees, not only ecologically, but to the people who've lived their lives around these trees. You can also consider, 'how many historical events has this tree seen?'. Although trees don't have eyes or nervous systems (that we know of!), I believe that considering how many historical events or generations they have loved through is a great way of giving trees personality and ensuring people value them enough to care for and keep them. Sketching in the French Alps

 Below is an example of a 0.5mm ballpoint pen sketch which I did while on a ski holiday in Flaine, France over the Christmas break. I am happy with this sketch as I believe it accurately represents the view from outside of the hotel where we were staying. I think that this is well proportioned and perspectived on the whole.
