Tin Mining: The Hidden Landscape of Cornwall
On a recent visit to Cornwall, I was fortunate enought to visit Geevor Tin Mine museum. It was a very interesting site, and strangely eery to learn about how many local men's lives were spent underground, with all of their stories, and images of the conditions. This visit got me wondering, with one viewpoint on landscape being people's sense of place and memories tied to locations, many of these local miner's senses of place and feeling of being home would've been underground. This was incredible to think about and live through the experience at the museum, that these people would have known a Cornwall unlike anyone does today, a dark, damp and dusty Cornwall. It's very interesting to consider how people's livelihoods and local trades can change localised landscape scenery both above ground, and in people's minds.
