Holiday Destination Design Observations
On a recent family holiday to Center Parcs in Wiltshire, I picked up on and realised different masterplanning observations of how the site had been designed. The site certainly has people in mind, with everywhere being accessible by land train, cycle, or foot. This ensures people have a relaxing, quiet and safe stay while at the park. Almost all facilities are centralised to the park, such as swimming pool, visitor services and shops and restaurants. This ensures there is no confusion as to where to go, and makes wayfinding easier. A centralised car park means no cars will be around the site other than maintenance vehicles. I believe that this, with some alterations would be a great model for a modern and sustainable design of places where people live. All non centralised facilities such as the sports hall, activities and additional restaurants and shops are all located near to or on nodes of main pathways and routes on site meaning they are easy to bump into when heading around the site. The site is additionally very well lit at night for safety.
